As more evidence surfaces surrounding “Prince of Darkness” Joseph Steffen’s smear campaign against Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley, yet another Ehrlich appointee is fired for online mischief, this time for using racial slurs against Hispanics on his web log.
Union activists, environmentalists, and concerned citizens in Calvert County prove it is possible to deal a setback to the world's biggest corporation when they blocked Wal-Mart's scheme to evade local zoning ordinances by building a Super Store in all but name. But Wal-Mart still wants to build a VERY big store in Calvert and staff it with poverty-wage employees, further spreading its union-busting, sprawl-inducing presence across Maryland. Let Round 2 begin!
Gov. Ehrlich coninues to crow about his alleged environmental accomplishments. But the nonprofit Environmental Integrity Project has placed Maryland on the top-10 list of states with the dirtiest power plants. Meanwhile, the frustrating and environmentally damaging traffic congestion in the Washington and Baltimore regions is ranked among the worst in the country, according to a recent national study. While the Baltimore area ranked 17th in the nation, the Washington area came in a 3rd and is poised to pass even Los Angeles and San Francisco as the most congested in the country.
Cong. Al Wynn (Dem., Md.-4th Cong. Dist.) has a long history of selling out his working middle-class constituents, most of whom live in Prince George's County. But over the past year he has really outdone himself, achieving a trifecta of betrayal by siding with President Bush on three huge votes: bankruptcy, estate tax, and energy. When will Wynn finally be held accountable in a Democratic primary?
Gov. Ehrlich continues to use taxpayer dollars to fund politically motivated ads and promotions that are timed and designed to advance his own re-election campaign.
In the last issue of The Maryland Progressive, we discussed the false promise of charter schools as a way to improve Maryland's public school system. Instead of privatizing public schools, why not try a more obvious solution—provide public schools with adequate funding. Finland has no charter schools, its public schools have one teacher for every ten students, and teaching is an honored and well-compensated profession. Not surprisingly, Finland's schools are considered the best in the world. Can we book a flight to Finland for Maryland's charter-happy Schools Superintendent Nancy Grasmick?

"The other side is counting on people not having a good memory... These folks drove the economy into a ditch and want the keys back. You've got to say the same thing to them you say to your teenager: You can't have the keys back because you don't know how to drive yet..."
-President Obama,
July 8 in Kansas City

PM's political strength comes from over 15,000 individual member-supporters and partnerships with 50 of Maryland's largest community, faith-based, labor, and civil rights groups. But we need your support to continue holding elected officials accountable so they respond to the needs of regular voters – not deep-pocket special interests.
