Living Wage

Prince George's Living Wage Law

Living Wages Passed with a Vote of 7-1 on June 3, 2003

Council Chair Shapiro, Councilmembers Hendershot, Dernoga, Peters, Exum, Bland and Dean all voted in favor of the bill. Councilmember Knotts voted No. Councilmember Harrington, a strong supporter of the bill, had to leave the public hearing early, but not before he pledged his support for Living Wages.

The Living Wage Act for Prince George's County went into affect July 1, 2004. Workers for County Contractors who have 10 or more employees and $50,000 or more in county contracts saw their wages almost double once the bill took affect.

Thank You!

Progressive Maryland thanks its affiliated labor organizations and its members for turning out in large numbers in support of this bill despite the fact that it doesn't directly affect labor union members. Your dedication to the plight of the working "person" is an example for us all.

Special thanks to Councilmembers Hendershot, Exum and Peters who helped this bill pass through committee.

And last but not least, thanks to Aisha Braveboy and County Executive Johnson's office, for working closely with us to make this bill right for Prince George's County.

Councilmember David Harrington (District 5), Democratic Central Committee member Mary Murphy, UFCW L. 400 rep Robin Williams and others announce their support for living wage.

"The other side is counting on people not having a good memory... These folks drove the economy into a ditch and want the keys back. You've got to say the same thing to them you say to your teenager: You can't have the keys back because you don't know how to drive yet..."
